1. Call Anyone with a Spare Key

If you got locked out of your house, the first thing you should do is call anyone who might have a spare key. It’s an effective practice to give a trustworthy friend or family member a spare key.

Although this practice might be a hit or miss, you have the certainty someone has a spare key.

If you rent your house or apartment, you can call the landlord or building manager to let you back in your unit.

2. Check Other Doors, Windows, and Garages

When you’ve already tried option one without success, your next option is to try to find a way to get in. Start by examining the perimeter of your property to find an alternative entrance.

If you live in a house, you can try an alternate door, window, or garage. Many garages might have a code that will unlock the garage.

Those who live in a house or an apartment building might not have the same luck finding an alternative entrance. Don’t try your luck trying to climb the second-floor window, or you could get injured.

3. Ask Your Neighbors for Help

If you’re locked out of your home and cannot find another way in, you should try asking your neighbors for help. They might not have a spare key, but they can loan you a screwdriver, ladder, or a place to wait until you’re able to get back in.

4. Try to Use a Credit Card

You might be able to unlock your house using a credit card, depending on what type of lock you have.

If you have a simple and older lock, you might be able to get away using a credit card or other similar type to unlock it. This might be impossible to do if you have a more secure and modern lock.

5. Remove the Doorknob

If you can get your hands on a screwdriver, you might be able to remove the doorknob. However, keep in mind this will not be possible if you have a deadbolt.

You will need the right kind of screwdriver to remove the doorknob.

6. Call a Locksmith

When all other methods fail, you should call local locksmith services to let you back in your house. The locksmith is the fastest and safest way to get back into your house when there’s no other way.
